Freeride skis 100% handmade in (Bavaria) Germany only 50 pairs of each model a year (real custom) tip to tail white ash woodcore with carbon stringers transparent topsheet. pureskis—freeride skis for lovers made with craftsmanship and idealism
In the surfing scene they are real heroes: the owners of the small shops, the so called shapers. Their products are so coveted that their addresses are only passed on secretely. Yassin Mounajed is the new shaper in the skiing scene: based upon his technical knowledge as joiner and boatbuilder and his passion as enthusiastic freerider, he produces skis on a small scale. Thus skis with a soul come into existence. Aesthetic and real.
Precision and technical skill are the core competences at pureskis. During several days of handiwork, materials that have proved their worth in boatbuilding such as carbon or ash wood are processed into unicums. Therefore every pair of skis produced at pureskis forms a harmonic symbiosis of high tech and craftsmanship.
It takes a good two to three days until the craftsmen in the board and ski shop, with which pureskis maintain a business connection, complete a single pair of skis.
However it is Yassin Mounajed's intuition, which gives every pair of skis its unique feel, its "soul": his experience as a freerider, his knowledge about materials and his enthusiasm for skiing. These talents give every pair of skis the unique "pow" which is what the rider can feel when being on snow.
Optically the skis resemble classic surfboards: the transparent top layer makes it possible to see the tip-to-tail wood core. Ever since the company's establishment in 2004, this technique reflects the spirit of pureskis: no graphics, just a perfect ski. In addition to the currently popular and aggressively looking graphics, the skis made by pureskis stand out because of their clean and soft beauty of the pure wood.
Currently available are the all mountain ski "number one" and the big mountain/freeride ski "number two". A new addition to the line is the model "number three", which is a continuation of the "number one" model that has been further developed to rip slopes and cruise in powder.
The outstanding riding characteristics of all three models are steering stability, dynamics, excellent grip of the edges as well as flexibility in changing turns.
Prices for a pair of skis start at 900 euros. www.pure-skis.com

[How the Rabbit got its name]
"...Well, yes, Rabbit on the roof... I live above my shop and a large part of the roof is inclined and protected in a natural way by the walls of my neihgbors. A friend gave me a rabbit for my kids, and after eating a bit too much stuff in my house, he ended up there... Another friend came by one day and saw the sight, French, and pronounced with his charming French accent, rabbit?, Rabbit on the roof?! and the name stuck. Since many generations of rabbits have come and gone. Especially after another friend gave me a female and voilà! The first births happenned between the roof and the sub isolation, so it started "raining rabbits", they look like small hairless pitbulls at that age, but move a lot and therefore fall. Now I have several in the shop too. I should train them to sand because they eat tonnes and only watch me work...?"

[Comments from Peter]
" I'm Rabbit on the Roof, Peter Steltzner to most, and I'd love telling you a bit more about what I'm doing. I read on your site a bit with a few errors, but thanks for having me there. I'm from california originally but have been living n France for twenty years, in Paris where I make furniture and do steam bent wood. I have an old crazy stream bending shop, some is from the turn of the last century, and working with it I wanted to have a production I enjoyed, especially because Parisan life is stressful and far too far from the mountains. I thought of the beautiful old skis we so often see on the walls of our favorite mountain spots and thought to make a modern, competitive, performant ski with the same materials and look, and also because in wood bending we use the same woods (ash and hickory mainly) that skis have been made out of for centuries. I'm for progress but our forfathers were far from stupid and had an amazing capacitiy for evaluating our natural ressources through time and experience... So I am humblely trying to render them justice by doing the same thing all while incorporating just the right amount of mondern fiber and resine, p-tex race bases and edges to pull all the good out of their old knowledge while making a modern skis "way old school". So far thanks to Seb Meyer the skis have already won many freeride events, Derby de la Meije 2006, 2007 en equipe, etc; and please a few high mountain guides who have them so I am continuing to fulfill my passion for the mountain and for skiing. I have several shapes already defined that can be checked out on my very new and under construction web site, www.rabbitontheroof.com, few pics for the moment, with the intention of making more skis, solid healthy constructions with one off varied personalized finishes."

Peter Steltzner ran away from California to live in Paris and produce steam-bentwood furniture. Making skis became his passion...and now a business! Hickory/ash cores with kevlar and carbon for modern designs with old-world craftsmanship. Cool pics of the workshop and some skis on the website. Beautiful photography too. Peter is working hard to get more shapes and designs out the door to skiers. Seb Meyer has won some freestyle events with these skis in Europe!
[Comments from a French enthusiast]
So, rabbit on the roof is a mark of french hand made ski.The craftsman Peter ... (I don't remember is name, sorry) is a cabinet maker (he worked with wood). His main job consists to build wooden piece of furniture and his hobby is the ski. Now, he always continues to build wooden furniture but he also builds ski in his "factory" in La Grave - La Meije (freeride resort). If I remember well, he started to build skis two years ago and the first comments of the skiers were very good. As building skis isn't his main activities, you must order a pair of skis and he makes it. Building skis is only a passion for him, he sells approximetly 10 pairs per year. His fabrication process is very special... It's a bit like Mac Gyver... He succeed to made a very efficient core with titanium and kevlar covered with fibre glass and finally recovered with a very nice piece of wood. I've seen two pairs this year, it's absolutely amazing. The flex is customizable, if you want a stiff nose and a smooth tail or the reverse, or the twice, it's possible! An inconvinient, the construction could be fragile sometimes. Three models last year (I'm sure of the name but not of the length...) :
The Gaspard : 193 (build for the mountain guide)
The Meije : 195 but fat (very stiff, a derby ski)
A lady ski more smooth.
There's only one prorider : Sébastien Mayer who rides always with tele bindings. (A very good one, he winned the 2006 "derby de la Meije" in category tele bindings)

How did Peter get the name "Rabbit on the Roof" ?

"A pair of RACCOON skis, it's the fusion of the audacity of passionate Quebecers and their relation with that nature around them, producing exceptional skis born out of the will to do things differently: to create your own skis and to ski with them. For many it was unrealistic, but for RACCOON it was the ultimate challenge. With years of hard work, we did succeed in designing a ski living up to our expectations. In the winter of 2009, the first usable RACCOON ski made its appearance at the 24 hours of Tremblant. A dream was becoming true... For every pair of skis sold, Tree Canada will plant a tree." - Website February 2010

"No other ski can turn so fast and so easy on groomed slopes (2 or more linked parallel turns per second). This technique requires slightly lifted ski tips. The ski is pivoting on its fins and therefore needs neither weight transfer nor edging between two successive turns, just twisting the feet left or right. The torsional moment produced by pivoting skis must be compensated by some anti-rotation of arms and poles. The skier’s body does not move. Running on rear fins is like „skating“ down the hill. Skating down hard&steep off-piste in Les 2 Alpes without sunshine (short video)"

Ski Types:   Hybrid-Other

Ok, probably the scariest hybrid, franken-"ski" I have ever seen (especially the pictures with an old Tyrolia 350 binding). Something tells us this would actually work in very steep corn snow. Here's the image: Take your ski and cut off the part behind your rear binding. Now replace the part behind the binding with a hinged set of metal fins to dig into the snow when pressured. Truly odd and disturbing, in an impressive engineering idea way.... Look for yourself. Think outside the box. Don't get run over by a pair. Review coming in Spring 2008 we think !!!   "Ride-doctor.com skis 07/08 Soon after Bob opened the ride-doctor.com shop in Serre Chevalier, he decided it was time to tinker with skis again.

Bob, ride-doctor.com shaperAfter 20 years in the industry, it's hard to stay away, especially when you can at last get to shape YOUR VERY OWN skis, without any marketing people breathing down your neck.

A crazy idea for some (another new ski brand on a more than saturated market), but obvious for Bob: there is always room for someone who can offer REAL, unpretentious and timeless products ... for REAL riders ... at a REAL price.

Ride-doctor.com philosophy: put 20 years of experience into the product. Communicating our passion, the on snow performance and reliability of our skis are the priorities.

If you are into techno-marketing gadgets, pro riders or glossy adverts you'll be disappointed ...
